in short, it looks like there are recently released apps which make the situation much better for Android users than was the case even very recently. I haven't been able to test the following with my MIDI controller yet (I'm on the road) but will do so and report back.
I've done more hunting and it's really surprising how few options there are out there, and how difficult they are to track down.
